Dark 'n' Stormy (Once Upon a Time Season Premiere!)

"Stormy waters ahead..."

That's what Once Upon a Time fans can look forward to in the season 3 premiere, according to the show's creators. (The last time we saw the citizens of Storybrooke, a couple of major characters got sucked into crazy, stormy-looking portals.) In an interview with TV Guide, they teased a "dark trip to Neverland" and the obstacles that lie ahead in this mysterious new realm. Writer/creator Adam Horowitz pointed out the most obvious twist, "There's a darkness to [Peter] Pan." Even the Lost Boys are much more sinister and the ladies of Mermaid Lagoon are supposedly a much darker version ...Hmm, are you sensing a theme yet?

Based on the cocktail's name alone, the Dark 'n' Stormy is perfect for eager Once fans as they await the premiere, but I also picked this drink as an homage to one of my favorite additions to the show: Captain Hook. Hook, as we all know, is a pirate (complete with guy liner and sly innuendos). And what do pirates love to drink? Rum. So let's all raise a glass to the return of Once Upon a Time!

The original Dark 'n' Stormy is made with Gosling's Black Seal Rum, but any "black" rum could be used as a substitute. (Sometimes, the grocery store liquor aisle will have to do.) This particular spirit has a rich molasses color and flavor. Its deep, spicy notes pair well with ginger beer, the only other required ingredient for this cocktail. However, as one should expect with a Once Upon a Time-inspired concoction, there's a twist!

Apple juice and red apple slices are a fresh complement to this strong drink and add a pop of color. The crisp sweetness balances out all of the spice. Plus, I just had to sneak in a tribute to my favorite Once villain. The Evil Queen, with her blazing red lipstick and fierce gowns, immediately comes to mind when I see the red apples (but these aren't poisoned with a sleeping curse, I promise).

Simply combine all of the ingredients in an ice-filled glass, stir, then you're ready to enjoy!

And, in case you're wondering why I sliced the apples the way I did, it's yet another nod to Neverland.

"Second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning!"

Premiere parties with friends are always fun, and every party deserves a tasty themed cocktail! To get you in the right mood for the show tonight, this Dark 'n' Stormy will definitely do the trick. Channel your inner pirate/swashbuckler, and bring on Tinker Bell, shadowy Peter Pan, and menacing Lost Boys!

(*For another premiere party idea, you can make Chocolate & Cinnamon Pots de Creme for dessert!)
