Persimmon Cosmo

For that pop of orange color this Halloween, not everything has to be pumpkins or candy corn. And, you don't have to commit Pumpkin Spice Crime in order to make every drink feel like a Fall drink. Impress your friends and family by serving something a little different this October...

The Persimmon Cosmo is a beautiful spin on the classic, swanky cocktail. This is the season for sweet, ripe persimmons, and I've got a big bowl of them sitting on my kitchen counter...a perfect orange, Autumn display. In cocktail form, they're paired with vodka, a kiss of citrus, and a delicate hint of St. Germain Elderflower liqueur. Serve them up in martini glasses, and you can add a sophisticated touch to your pumpkin-carving parties, scary movie marathons, and costume bashes.

The recipe that I originally found called for persimmon puree. You can simply peel and chop up the fruit, then puree it in a food processor with a squeeze of lime juice.

Instead, I decided to break out my little juicer and get some pure persimmon juice! I highly recommend making sure that your persimmons are very ripe, first. Otherwise, the juice will be heavy with tannins and just make your mouth pucker. Not good. (This may have happened with the first one that I juiced......Not good.)

I also opted to use freshly squeezed calamansi over the traditional lime juice! This floral, super-fragrant citrus pairs well with the St Germain. (Another giant bowl sitting on my kitchen counter...)

Finally, it's time for the booze! Pour the juices, vodka, and liqueurs into an ice-filled shaker. Channel your inner Cocktail-Tom Cruise... (You got the Hippy Hippy Shakes??)

Then, serve in martini glasses!

I love how smooth this drink is! The vodka isn't too strong or overpowering, but is a perfect match for the tart citrus, the luscious persimmon, and the sweet fruity elderflower. Its festive color definitely makes it perfect for holiday parties, from Halloween all the way up to Thanksgiving! Tip: these would be so fun if you're hosting a cookie swap!

Persimmon Cosmo (serves 2; adapted from Food & Style)

4 oz Persimmon Juice
1 oz Fresh Calamansi Juice
4 oz Vodka
1 oz St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
1/2 oz Cointreau
  1. Fill a cocktail shaker 2/3 of the way with ice. Add juices, vodka, and liqueurs.
  2. Cover, and shake until chilled thoroughly.
  3. Pour into martini glasses, and enjoy!
